A curiosity-driven IP professional with attention to detail

Sebastian Giese, German and European Patent Attorney, works in HOFFMANN EITLE’s Biotechnology practice group. He joined the firm in 2016 and has since gained extensive experience in examination, opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office as well as in the prosecution of international patent families. Sebastian is also regularly involved in contentious national proceedings, including infringement and nullity proceedings. His technical expertise covers various fields of life sciences, including molecular biology, virology and biochemistry.

Before becoming a patent attorney, Sebastian studied molecular medicine at the University of Ulm (Germany) and biology with a major in biochemistry at ETH Zurich (Switzerland). Having discovered his scientific interest in viruses, he was awarded a scholarship from the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds to do his PhD in the field of HIV research at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology at University College London (UK). Following a stint of postdoctoral research at the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center at Rockefeller University (New York, USA), Sebastian let go of viruses and started his career in intellectual property.

Outside the office Sebastian often heads for the Alps – originally from the rather flat northern part of Germany he is still in awe of being high above the sea.
