Irene Martín, qualified as Spanish and European Patent Attorney, is with the HOFFMANN EITLE’s Biotechnology practice group since 2012. Irene has large experience in drafting applications and prosecuting them at the European Patent Office (EPO) and at the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO). She also coordinates prosecution of large families worldwide and has experience in opposition and appeal proceedings. Further, Irene does opinion work such as patentability, infringement and freedom-to-operate analysis. The clients she works with reside all over the world, including universities and research institutions, small and medium-sized companies and corporate giants. She is specialized in biotechnology and life sciences and has particular expertise in small molecule therapeutics, peptides, antibodies and fragments thereof, dairy products, diagnostic devices, biologics, vaccines, cell therapies, etc.
Prior to joining HOFFMANN EITLE, Irene studied biochemistry at Complutense University in Madrid (Spain). She was granted the award for the best academic results, “Premio Extraordinario”, and spent one semester in Switzerland, with an Erasmus fellowship. During her PhD studies at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) Barcelona, she worked in peptide synthesis and intracellular drug delivery and spent one year at the LMU Munich, in the Department of Pharmacy, where she gained hands-on experience with polymer synthesis and nucleic acid delivery. Irene has co-authored several publications in peer-review journals, including Angewandte Chemie, Journal of Controlled Release and a front cover in ChemBioChem, and has presented her work in several congresses and symposiums. Her studies were supported by scholarships awarded by “La Caixa” Foundation, the Spanish Ministry of Education and Innovation (FPU) and the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). During her time at IRB Barcelona, she was active as a science communicator organizing seminars and workshops for the general public.
Irene speaks Spanish, English, German and French. In her free time, Irene loves spending time with her family and listening to podcasts. You may find her in the mountains, cycling or practicing yoga.
